Speaker setup new 3D surround formats

There is always a lot to do about a surround speaker setup. After all there is 5.1, 6.1 and 7.1. With the arrival of the new immersive 3D audio formats, Dolby Atmos, DTS: X and Auro3D it becomes very unclear for many. All these standards have their own view on how 3D audio should be set up. Time to break through this loudspeaker setup in order to arrive at a good universal solution. Curious? KEEP READING I try to keep it simple.

Purpose and usefulness of 3D audio

Here you see a comparison of Dolby Atmos with Auro3D. The goal is the same: to create surround sound around us, just like in real life. If we think about it for a moment then it becomes a lot easier to undetstand and come to the right loudspeaker setup. If we do it according to the booklet of these two then we get a lot of speakers. We therefore come to the conclusion that this is only possible with the Trinnov Altitude processor. This is a fantastic High End processor, however, the majority of the market consists of a maximum of 11 channel amplifiers / receivers. So that is the focus in this article.

In order to enjoy all of the surround formats and not to use more than 11 channels… I explain it simply. Gerben van Duyl of Procella Audio created the next 9.1 ITU circle. Simply sketch your living room or space and put it over the ITU circle and slide it where necessary. Sounds simple right? Still some extra explanation: almost all NOT Trinnov products have a chip that is limited to 11.1. In immersive 3D audio terms 7.1.4 or 9.1.2 maximum. What does this mean?

7.1.4

Left, Center, Right, Surround Left+Right, Back surround Left+Right

LFE

Height Front Left+Right, Height Rear Left+Right

9.1.2

Left, Center, Right, Surround Left+Right, Back surround Left+Right

LFE

Height Left+Right, Wide Left+Right

With the addition of left and right wide speakers the large gap between the left and right screen channels is filled and thus provides a very nice regular full circle of speakers and all arise at about a 45 degree angle, ideal for smooth surround sound movements.

The regular and equal distance from the top speakers create an angle of approximately 50 degrees ideal for credible phantom images between them. Sounds now move in a half dome of 3D audio.

The choice between 7.1.4 and 9.1.2 depends on the space and number of seats.
